PORTLAND – Brendan died unexpectedly of an undiagnosed heart condition, while playing a game of basketball on Nov. 7th, 2013. He was born in Portland, Maine on March 1, 1979. He leaves behind his parents, Nazare and Jeremiah Conway, his brother, Patrick, and his wife, Josepha, Brendan’s girlfriend, Lauren Reid, an aunt and uncle, Trudy Conway and Huschang Banan, his cousins, Sedira and Daniel, as well as an aunt and five cousins in Portugal.
Brendan’s grace was a tender heart, coupled with a fine intelligence and emotional depth. He cared deeply about family and friends. This open-heartedness extended to young people with whom he loved dealing in many contexts. Not surprisingly, he worked as a family counselor with Opportunity Alliance and founded a summer camp for low-income families in Portland. He loved coaching, an activity that was always much more than game-plans and x’s and o’s, but rather a way for him to participate in their growth as persons.
He graduated from Bates College in 2001 with a degree in psychology. In 2004, he received his Masters of Social Work from USM. He had a large, generous heart. He was honest and loyal, with a keen concern that people be treated fairly, and all of this leavened with a great sense of humor, a twinkle, and a smile. He was a son who brought enormous joy to our family and was an extraordinary older brother. His friendships were many and substantial.
