Brenda Joyce Whitlock Sears, 71
Brenda Joyce (Whitlock) Sears, 71, of Portland, Maine, passed away on July 6, 2013 with her daughter and son at her bedside during palliative care at Saint Joseph’s Rehabilitation and Residence facility in Portland, Maine.
Brenda was born in Portland, Maine on November 3, 1941 at Maine General Hospital to James Alyce Whitlock and Edna Mabel Durgin. She graduated with a diploma from Westbrook High School.
Prior to her last fifteen years as a homemaker Brenda worked as a Maine State Police dispatcher for several years and thereafter for many additional years as a nurse and administrator on the burn unit at Maine Medical Center. She also was an avid participant on citizens’ band (CB) radio, very spiritual and religious, serving as an Extraordinary Minister through the years at several churches, loved playing Beano and Bingo along with her arts and crafts interests, especially loved to fish and particularly renowned for her “wicked” sense of humor. Most important of all, Brenda was a dedicated mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.
Brenda is preceded in death by her parents, James A. Whitlock and his second wife, Sylvia Jane Carson Whitlock, along with Brenda’s second husband, Leonard S. Sears, adored step grandchild Kristina McPhail, grandmother Delia B. Whitlock, along with aunt, Corinne B. Hagen and husband George Hagen
Brenda is survived by three brothers, Robert Whitlock, Larry Whitlock and Steve Whitlock; a sister, Nancy Whitlock Manigault, all whom live in the Greater Salt Lake City, Utah area. Brenda is also survived by her two children, Chuck Sears and daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Richard “Dick” Rogers. In addition, Brenda is survived by seven grandchildren (who called her “Nana”) and four great grandchildren (who called her “Nannie”). Her grandchildren are comprised of Derek and Matt Sears, sons to Chuck; Marc Sears along with his partner Rhianna Jacobs, Nicole Shaw and partner Rob Walker, Brandon McPhail and Brianna McPhail, all of whom are sons and daughters to Lisa Rogers, along with step grandson, Eddie McPhail, stepson to Lisa Rogers. Brenda’s loving great grandchildren are Keigan Sears, Maija Jacobs, Gabrielle Sears (son and daughters to Marc Sears and Rhianna Jacobs) and Michael Walker (son to Nicole Shaw and Rob Walker).
On behalf of Brenda, her family would like to thank her doctor and especially the nurses who so compassionately cared for her at Saint Joseph’s Rehabilitation and Residence. Their love and kindness to not only Brenda, but to her family gave all much strength and comfort during her stay.
