Bennie Andrew Carlson, the son of Mary (Steele) and Ben Carlson, was born on March 31, 1929 in Oaks Township, near Roosevelt, MN. He attended country school through the eighth grade. His family moved south of Warroad in 1938, and Bennie attended high school in Warroad. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 through 1952 during the Korean War, and later lived in Smithfield, VA for 20 years where he learned to run boilers. After his wife, Jacqueline passed away, he moved back to Roosevelt in 1970 and started working at Marvin Windows. He and Ione Johnson were married in 1971. After a few years of truck driving, he worked as a boiler man in the boiler room of the plant. In addition to working at Marvin’s, Bennie ran his own business specializing in outdoor boilers, and worked as a certified instructor in High and Low Pressure Boiler Classes. He enjoyed his large garden, where he raised tomatoes, corn, cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, melons, cabbage and raspberries.
Bennie Carlson passed away on Feb. 18, 2007 at his home in Roosevelt, MN at the age of 77.
Bennie is survived by his wife, Ione of Roosevelt; children, Sybil Arrington of Portsmouth, VA, Virginia (Richard) Johnson of Roosevelt, Teresa Carlson of Roosevelt, Sharon Carlson of South Shore, SD, Mary Grace Carlson of Detroit Lakes, MN, Ronald (Geraldine) Johnson of Roosevelt, Richard (Virginia) Johnson of Roosevelt, Bobbie (Arlyn) Stewart of Roosevelt, Randie (Renee) Johnson of Roosevelt and Roselyn (Don) Moyer of Roosevelt; 32 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; brother, Joe Carlson of Warroad; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 1st wife, Jacqueline; two sons, James and Bennie “Andy”; step-daughter, Wanda; and sisters, Clara, Dorothy, Jenny, Bessie, Edna and Abby.
