Barbara Watson Olson, 89, formerly of Sandy Shores, MN, died Friday, September 22, 2006 in Lakewood Care Center in Baudette. She was born December 16, 1916 to Andrew and Roxy (Perkins) Watson in Litchfield, MN. At the age of 3 months, the family moved to St. Paul, MN.
Barb graduated from St. Paul Central High School and attended the University of Minnesota a” Minneapolis for 6 A½ years where she received her degree in education and in political science. Following her schooling she moved to Williams, MN where she taught for 11 years with the last 2 years in Baudette. She had also worked as postmaster in Williams from 1959 to 1963.
She married Jerome Arnold Olson on May 29, 1942 at the Congregational Church in Baudette.
Following World War II she returned to the Williams area with her husband Jerome and she was a substitute teacher for several years while raising her children and she returned to full time teaching in 1967.
Barb was very active at Bethany Lutheran Church in Williams with Bible study. She also was on the school board and active in PTA. She enjoyed crafts, knitting, crocheting, quilt making and reading. Barb was a longtime member of the order of the Eastern Star in White Bear Lake, MN. She continued to enjoy reading and she has written articles for the Lake of the Woods Historical Society Book.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jerome A. Olson; her infant son, Jerome A. Olson, Jr. and her daughter in-law, Mary Olson.
Survivors include her children, Carl A. Olson of Sequim, Washington; Stuart R. (Beverly) Olson of Quito, Ecuador; Clare Olson Carpenter (Dan Whalen) of Duluth, MN; five grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
