Artin Simon Melkonian, affectionately known as “Harout”, passed away February 3, 2017 in Farmington Hills, Michigan. Born in Haifa, Palestine, on December 24, 1941, he was the son of Simon and Lucia (Ohanesian) Melkonian. The family moved to Beirut, Lebanon, where his youth was heavily burdened with his father’s ill-health and eventual paralysis. As a little boy, Artin found himself in the unfortunate circumstance of having to help support his family.**** Diving into the sea to gather oysters and clams was one way he managed to eke out a slim income for the family. Being a young lad with extra energy, he would occasionally even take time out to just enjoy a swim in the waters of the Mediterranean. Walking along on the sandy beaches, he would look for lost beach balls, which he could gather and then sell for extra income. Eager to learn, Artin also spent time with various mechanics, who taught him how to repair gas and diesel engines.**** By age thirteen, Artin became an expert engine mechanic, working for local shops on such engines. This led him to his lifelong career as a master mechanic in the largest Caterpillar Tractors shop in that part of the world. **** In 1988, he married Dirouhie Nalkranian and became a devoted husband and dedicated father to his children. But, Caterpillar sent him to Libya, where his expertise was needed. While there, he became interested in engineering and read extensively on the subject, as well. He began working on building bridges and building roads in Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, and the Congo. He was an animal activist, too. His love of animals led him to gather around him cheetahs, hyenas, parrots and even a baby Lion. **** By 1993, he returned to Beirut, where he was self-employed, again, as an engine mechanic. But the lure of America brought him to the United States with his family, where his youngest son was born. By 2006, he retired from his first love as an expert engine mechanic.**** Artin Simon “Harout” Melkonian was a loving and caring man who shall always be remembered by all who loved him. ……….FAMILY MEMBERS Beloved wife, Dirouhie Melkonian; Dearest children: Simon Melkonian, Lucine Melkonian, Ara Melkonian, Sevag Melkonian.
