Arthur Black Lance, 78, of Warren, MN, died holding his daughter’s hand on Palm Sunday, April 2, 2023, in Oakland Park Home, Thief River Falls, MN.
Arthur Smith Black Lance was born on September 6, 1944, in Wagner, SD, the son of Rev. William and Mary (Jandreau) Black Lance. He grew up in Rosebud, SD, and graduated from Mission High School in 1962. Art enlisted in the US Army in 1965, serving his country at Fort Wainright in Alaska: he was honorably discharged in 1967. His father took a job as a minister in the Onigum Community near Walker, MN, where Art met his future wife of almost 50 years, Bonita Day. They were married on June 4, 1966 in Cass Lake. The family moved to Warren in 1972, where Art worked for the Tenneco Gas Pipeline Group as an operations technician. Following his retirement in 2001, Bonnie begged him to go back to work- Art then got a job with Nordic Fiberglass that kept him out of trouble. Bonnie died on November 21, 2015. On February 11, 2017, Art was married to Sharyl Peters in the Warren Evangelical Covenant Church, a church he’d attended since moving to town.
In his free time, Art enjoyed all manner of handiwork. From woodworking and woodburning, to beadwork and making-things-work, Art enjoyed creating both pieces of art and cobbling together “creative” tools to get a job done. Rather than buy something new, Art liked using what he had at-hand… along with a generous amount of duct tape.
He was greatly loved and his wit and wisdom will not be forgotten.
Art is survived by his three children, Terence (Tammie) Black Lance of Thief River Falls, Cynthia (Dale Adamski) Black Lance of Warren, and Charles (Kathryn) Black Lance of Baxter, MN; his wife, Sharyl Black Lance of Thief River Falls; his grandchildren, Andrew (Elizabeth) and Aaron (Shayna) Black Lance, Olivia, Bethany, and Chayton Black Lance, and Chelsey Adamski; and brother, Lorenzo Black Lance of Rapid City, SD.
In addition to his wife, Bonnie; Art was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Elgene, Norma, Nilus, and Julie.
