Age 81, was called home by his heavenly Father on May 6, 2007 at Heartland Health Care Center of Ionia. Art was born November 4, 1925, in Muskegon, Michigan, the son of the late Jacob and Nellie (Medendorp) Scott. He was raised in the First Reformed Church of Muskegon, later becoming a member of the United Methodist Churches in Ionia and Portland.
Art graduated from Muskegon High School in 1943. He played varsity football and was part of the class ‘A’ Michigan state championship teams in 1941 and 1942. Joining the United Sates Navy in 1943, he was stationed at Alameda Naval Air Station in California and was honorably discharged in 1946. Art earned his Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education from Central Michiagn University in 1950. He majored in English and minored in geography and physical education while playing varsity football for CMU in 1948 and 1949. He went on to earn a Mastors Degree from the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
On September 12, 1948 during his junior year in college he married Audrey Thayer of Boyne City , Michigan in Walloon Lake. While living in Ionia, Art taught English and coached basketball, football, and track at Ionia High School. In 1959 he began a successful banking career. Employed for ten years at Ionia County National Bank, he worked his way up to Senior Vice President. In 1969 Art was hired as president at Maynard Allen State Bank in Portland. He believed in treating customers well and fairly. Art remained as president of the bank until his retirment in 1991.
Art’s faith in God kept him grounded and he lived by the ‘Golden Rule’. He was dearly loved by his family and was a good friend to all who knew him. Art was passionate about sports, playing softball in Ionia and Portland late into his sixties and continuing to play basketball till age 77. He loved a good laugh and was quite the jokester. He also enjoyed reading, coin collecting, big band and jazz music, gardening and his chocolate.
Art was an active civic member of both the Portland and Ionia communites. Art was on the Board of Trustees at the Portland United Methodist Church and was President of Portland’s Kiwanis and Civic Clubs. He was a founding member and former president of the Michigan Association of Community Bankers and worked on several national community banking committees. In Ionia, Art served as presient of the Rotery Club, worked on the Ionia County 4-H board, and was a charter member of Ionia’s Industrial Development Committee.
Art is survived by his wife of 58 years, Audrey; sons, Arthur ‘Jack’ (Pattie) Scott Jr. and Charles Jacob (Elaine) Scott; grandson, Andrew Jacob Scott; sister, Betty (Herm) Zuidema; brothers, Harry (Eula) Scott and Russell (Marva) Scott; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Arthur in death are his parents; his sister, Ruth Rosenberg; and his brothers, Jay, John and Kenneth.
