The following was written by Mrs. McLawhorn’s daughter
Just a little history about my mother, Anna McLawhorn. She was born on June 1, 1926 in Germany. She grew up during the Depression and survived war torn Germany during the1940’s. She told her family that her family was a little better off than most because her grandfather knew people who could get them their necessities. She was predeceased by her sister, Lisle. Sometime in the early 1950’s she met Joseph L. McLawhorn, they got married and had Eva. In 1953, her husband was reassigned by the Army to come back to the United States. She and Eva entered the United States for the first time that year. As her husband made the Army a career, she was a good Army wife and went everywhere he was stationed, including Texas, France, back to Germany and finally Maryland. When they first came to Maryland, her husband was stationed at Ft. Holabird then Ft. Meade. When Eva was in high school, mom decided to go to work; her first job was at Drug Fair which was located at Rte. 197 and Rte. 198 in Laurel, Maryland. She became the fountain manager there. When Drug Fair sold to Grey Drug Company, she left there and went to work for Arbitron, also in Laurel, for those of you that don’t know Arbitron is similar to Neilson’s. When her grandson was born in 1977, Anna quit to become the best babysitter anyone could have. She lived a quiet life after her husband passed in 1988. She lived at home until she fell in 2012 and broke her leg, she lived in a nursing home until her passing , she was 90 years young.
