Ann Marie Lunka, age 102 a long time resident of Ely died peacefully, Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at St. Michael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia. Ann was born March 25, 1911 in Greaney, the daughter of Anton and Marie (Vesel) Starich, and grew up loving the outdoor farm work. When she was 17, Ann went to Ely where she worked in a boarding house. While there, she met her husband, Lawrence Lunka. They purchased a home on Lawrence Street just down from where she worked. They lived there for 58 years. On January 18, 2000, Ann entered St. Michael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center where she acquired a wonderful family of caring employees.
Ann was employed at Vertin’s Café for several years. She was active at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, a past Red Cross Volunteer, and a past member of Women’s Life. Currently Ann was a member of the Ely Women’s Slovenian Union and the Gilbert Women’s V.F.W., and the KSKJ. Ann loved children, often gifting even when she didn’t know them. She loved picking berries, and any and all outdoor activities. Ann was well known for making strudels with her friend Rosie Novak.
Ann was very committed to her family and friends. Survivors include her daughter: Josie (Dominic) Elioff; granddaughters: Jean Laine and Lori (Bill) Paschke; great-grandchildren: Ryan and Christopher Elioff, Jeremy Paschke; 3 great-great-grandchildren: Estavon, Sophia, and Christina.
Ann was preceded in death by her husband: Lawrence; brothers: Matt, Louis, Tony, Frank, Joe, Rudolph, and John Starich; and sisters: Angela Lagges and Mary Erzar.
