Andrew Jakob Mertely, age 92 of Hibbing died Tuesday, November 15, 2016 in Essentia Health – Virginia. He was born August 13, 1924 in Eveleth, the son of Andrew and Anna (Longar) Mertely and was a graduate of Eveleth High School, Virginia Junior College and the University of Minnesota-Duluth with a teaching degree. After high school, Andy enlisted in the United States Army. Following his service to his country, he started college and worked as a carpenter. He obtained his teaching degree and taught at several schools throughout Minnesota. His final career was with Continental Sales and Equipment Company as the Office Manager starting in 1959, a position he held for 30 years. Andy married Eljane Lundberg on August 22, 1965 in Hibbing. He was a member of the Hibbing Elks Lodge and First Lutheran Church. He enjoyed traveling, golfing, and was an avid bowler, bowling in many senior tournaments.
Andy is survived by his children: Connie (Bob Lewis) Mitchell of Aurora, Cathy (James) Anderson of Maple Grove, Kevin (Dee) Nelson of Parkville, and Melanie Nelson of Hibbing; grandchildren: Garret (Jennifer) Glanville, Seth (Jaime) Mitchell, Lindsy (Shane) Ketola, Kali (Roger) Johnson, Dallas (Jolene) Williams, Alyssa (Donovan) Shaughnessy, Stephanie Anderson, Jillian Anderson, Shawna (Jerell) Croaker, Jessie (Ryan) Schulz and Brandie Kahtava; 16 great-grandchildren; brothers: Conrad Mertely of Lakeland, FL and Charlie (Rita) Mertely of Montello, WI; daughter-in-law: Vickie Nelson of Wadena, MN; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Eljane; Son: Randy Nelson; and brother: Frank Mertely.
