Mr. Allan Philip Sadtler, Jr. (95), of Damascus, Maryland, died December 16, 2018, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.  He was the beloved husband of Lorraine W. Sadtler for nearly 65 years until her death in January 2014.  Born September 18, 1923 in Monrovia, MD, he was the first son of Allan Philip Sadtler, Sr. and Lorena Maye (King) Sadtler.

Mr. Sadtler joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served in the Pacific Theater in World War II until his discharge in 1946.  As a reservist he served his country again in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War in 1950-1951.

He studied topographic mapping at Columbia Tech. in Washington, D.C., then pursued his career with the U.S. Geological Survey as a cartographer engaged in preparing geological maps and illustrations for publication.  The last 12 years of his career he supervised the office of 60 illustrators and cartographers engaged in these operations.

Upon retiring, he and Lorraine enjoyed a 3-week Hawaiian vacation and continued to enjoy US and International travel to places of interest.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Damascus, Damascus American Legion Post 171, the Damascus Heritage Society, and a “Friend of the Damascus Community Fair”.

He thoroughly enjoyed hobbies and dabbled mostly in arts and crafts, including building doll houses, creating miniature furnishings, and stained glass art panels.  His imagination roamed freely as he created an outdoor garden village with vignettes of fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and a Pope Mobile for the Pope to ride the rails through the Village.

He was 77 when he created a vignette of Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs, which began a pastime that he enjoyed until he was 90.

He is survived by two daughters: Kay V. Cilensek and husband Ronald, and Carol L. Robinson and husband Roger; two sons: Brian A. Sadtler and wife Melissa, and Ronald P. Sadtler and wife Kimberly.  He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Shane Fadely, Dawn Fadely, Erica Englert, Rachael Darby, Daniel Sadtler, Sierra Sadtler, Garrett Sadtler and Miranda Sadtler; one step granddaughter: Jennifer List;  three great grandchildren: Rachael Fadely, Colton Darby, and Shay Darby; and a sister: Jennie Cruickshank.  He was predeceased by his wife Edna Lorraine Sadtler; his sisters Helen Harmon and Beverly Rau; and brothers John E. “Jack”, Charles E., and Neal B.
