Alice Marie Spitzley, age 78 of Sunfield was taken home to the Lord on September 10, 2013. Alice was born on January 15, 1935 in Westphalia, MI and the daughter of William and Esther (Wirth) Schafer. She was a graduate of Pewamo High School and began her career at Farm Bureau and later became a stay at home mom to care for her seven children. Alice eventually went to work for Meijer’s in Ionia and retired after 20 years of service. She loved to follow her children sporting events and later her grandchildren. Alice was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She shared her love of music by singing in the choir at St. Joseph’s Church in Pewamo and at St Patrick’s Church in Portland. Alice spent the winter season in Lakeland, Florida where she enjoyed being by the pool, playing golf, a good card game and the company of good friends. Grandma enjoyed baking and will always be remembered for her homemade sugar cookies and most of all the love and care of her family. Alice married Peter Simon on August 11, 1956, and together they had seven loving and devoted children. She married Roy Spitzley on August 21, 1987, and they shared 26 years of wonderful memories. She was preceded in death by her Father and Mother, several aunts and uncles, Peter Simon, and her grandson, Adam Miller. Surviving are her husband, Roy Spitzley; children, Ron (Carol) Simon, Barb (Ben) Wesley, Bruce (Kristine) Simon, Scott (Lorri) Simon, Therese (Jeff) Hudak, Beth (Dennis) Hagan, and Dawn (Ross) Feldpausch; step children, Tim (Jodi) Spitzley, Bryan (Sue) Spitzley, Cindy (Phil) Ritter, Brenda (Dan) Armbruster, and Mark (Katie) Spitzley; 28 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; siblings, Cornelia (Jim) Keilen, Julie Atkins, Julianne (Joe) Lenneman, Paul (Ruth) Schafer, Al (Doreen) Schafer, Mike (Jan) Schafer, and Charlie (Sue) Schafer; several sister and brother-in-laws and many nieces and nephews.
