Brunswick- Alfred Sturgeon Sr., 74, died peacefully Thursday, October 7, 2010 with his family by his side at Russell Park Rehab and Living Center in Lewiston.
He was born in Derby, Indiana on March 30, 1936, the son of Herbert Alfred and Velvalee (Ball ) Sturgeon.
He attended Oriole “Oil” Township High School in Perry County, Indiana. He quit school to support his family after the death of his father. In Indiana, he worked as a share-cropper, stripping tobacco. As a young adult, he moved to Pennsylvania where he worked in a factory learning the plumbing and heating trade. On November 15, 1962, he married Maybelle Tenney. In 1969 they moved to Maine where they raised their family. Mr. Sturgeon worked for Ballard Oil in Portland for several years. He then worked for Yarmouth Fuel Company and Brunswick Coal and Lumber for seventeen years. In 1988 he started Al’s Plumbing and Heating which he owned and operated with his wife and son.
He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of Maine in which he was active in all branches to include; Past Grand Master of the State of Maine, a 35 year member of the Presumpscot Lodge #91 in Falmouth, and the Grand Representative for the State of Maine for 5 years. Mr. Sturgeon was Past President of the Pine Tree Chapter of the Oil Heat Service Managers and a member of the Maine Oil Dealer’s Association. He was a former member of the Yarmouth Fire Department and the Brunswick Kiwanis Club. Over the years he also received many excellence and community service awards from the National Oil Heat Service Managers Association.
He enjoyed his work, hunting, traveling, listening to country music, playing poker, collecting guns, and knives.
He is survived by his wife, Maybelle Sturgeon of Brunswick, two sons, Alfred Sturgeon Jr. and his wife Jo-Ellyn of Brunswick and Robert A. Davies of Lacoste, Texas, two daughters, Patricia Beaulieu and her husband Bruce of Brunswick and Lori Ann Pomelow and her husband David of Lisbon Falls, one brother, Herbert Landers of Rockford, Illinois, one sister, Inez Wolfe of Floyds Knob, Indiana, 14 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Mary Ann Strout, two brothers, William Joseph Sturgeon and Forrest “Junior” Brierly and two sisters, Bessie Catherine Rison and Anna Finney.
The family thanks the staff at Russell Park and Hawthorne House for the care they extended to him.
