Dr. Alexander Brokans of Denton, MD, passed away Thursday, November 23, 2017, at The Pines Nursing and Rehabilitation in Easton, MD. He was 100 years old.
Born in Kaunata, Rezekne, Latvia on July 19, 1917, Dr. Brokans was the son of Jazeps Brokans and Tekla (nee Strods) Brokans. Dr. Brokans did his undergraduate studies in Latvia and graduated with a PhD in Agronomy at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany. He had moved to the United States after WWII eventually settled in Harrisburg, PA and worked for G.E. Sheffer & Son as a General Superintendent. He then worked for Iceland Seafood Corp in Camp Hill, PA where he was Vice President-Plant Operations. He moved to Maryland’s Eastern Shore in 1976 where he worked for Capt. Hanks Seafood. He then worked for Old Salt Seafood, Eastern Shore Seafood, before moving on to Sea Watch International from where he retired. In his career, he owned patents for seafood processing techniques.
Dr. Brokans is survived by his wife, Aria Brokans, presently of Easton; daughters: Inese Ardolino of Wilmington, DE and Anita Brokans of North East, MD; one sister, Marija Brokans of Jurmala, Latvia; grandchildren, Peter Ardolino of Fair Haven, NJ and Kari Ardolino Rudgers of Towson, MD; nieces and nephews: Mary Brokans of Harrisburg, PA; Rita Jordon of Monument, CO; Edmunds Brokans of Lansdale, PA; Juris Stepanuks of Latvia; Andris Stepanuks of Australia; Andris Silins of Australia; Ieva Nance of Australia and Laimons Sprogis of Cleveland, OH; and numerous great-grandchildren, grand-nephews and grand-nieces; a great-grandnephew and a great-grandniece. He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Eduards; sisters, Emma and Nora; and a great-granddaughter, Cathleen.
