Alex Batinich, age 95, of Tower/Lake Vermilion died Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at his home with family at his side. He was born November 10, 1920, in Eveleth, MN, the son of Nicoli and Milica (Malkovich) Batinich. He graduated from Eveleth High School. Alex worked many years in Chicago gut always came “home” to Lake Vermilion each summer. A Veteran of the US Army Air Corps and Air Force, Alex served in the Burma-Chinese Theatre during WWII. He was united in marriage to Mary Smilanich on August 7, 1999 in Wisconsin.
Alex worked as a carpenter and builder for the Chicago Public Schools retiring in 1983. He was a member of St. Vasilije of Ostrog Serbian Orthodox Church, The American Legion, and the Carpenters Union. He was a generous philanthropist gifting the University of Minnesota Immigrants History Center, the Lake Vermilion Cultural Center and numerous other charities.
Alex is survived by his wife: Mary; children: Nancy Caouette of Minneapolis, Larry Schuster of Minneapolis, John (Cathy) Schuster of Plymouth, MN, Ann (William) Waugh of Shoreview, MN, and Dorothy (Martin) Richmond of Minneapolis; his brothers: Nick (Dorothy) Batinich of Fullerton, CA, and Mitchell (Jan) Batinich of Plymouth, MN; his sister: Millie (Saya) Dowling of Deerfield Beach, FL; grandchildren: Mitchell, Emma and Alex Waugh, Elizabeth (Peter) Johnson, Laura (Dustin) Simonson, Eleanor and Calder Saari, Daisy and Lily Richmond; great-granddaughter: Elliana; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife: MaryEllen Mancina-Batinich; brothers: George, Pete, Steve, and Tom; and infant sister: Darlinka.
