Adam Vahratian was born to Vartouhi and Dikran Vahratian on March 7, 1931. He was the 4th of 5 children and the eldest son. Brother to Rose, Ann, Dotty, and Richard.
Adam went to high school at Cass Tech and graduated from University of Detroit with an engineering degree. On his 25th birthday, the last day of eligibility, he was drafted into the Military. By luck, he was the first class ever drafted directly into the navy. Due to his college degree, he was assigned to the Admirals staff where he served on 4 different air craft carriers. During this time, he traveled the world and latter in life viewed this as one of his life’s highlights.
In 1961, he met Louise Tashjian during an ACYOA church activity. They were married the next year, and they were together for 60 years. They were blessed with 2 children Deborah and Adam Joel. He later gained another daughter when Adam Joel married Suzanne Papazian in 1992, and he treated her with as much love as his own for 30 years.
Adam worked at Ford as an engineer for 40 years, designing automatic transmissions from the first concept in the late 1960’s to a modern 4 speed design launched in 1992. He received several patents as part of this work.
He loved to play cards. Each month he met with his bridge club, where they played at various homes and socialized about work and life.
Adam also loved sports, backgammon, and other activities. He played baseball and softball until later in life, and he loved to fish in both fresh water and on the sea shore.
Adam and Louise loved to travel. Vacationing in almost every state. They would spend Christmas in Florida for many years and eventually purchased a Condo in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with their sister and brother-in-law Joan and Mitchell Merdinian. For 40 years they spent summers and fall on the beach enjoying their time together.
His grandchildren were the light of his life. He had 5 grandchildren: Alexis, Lucy, Hailey, Bryan, and Marisa. They enjoyed time together, driving to activities, and celebrating birthdays and special events. He was often seen enjoying Barney live and Wiggles in concert. He enjoyed any opportunity to teach them to fish.
He is also survived by his sister in law’s Isabelle Vahratian and Joan Merdinian. He was also the proud uncle and God Father to many nieces and nephews.
