West Bath – Alfred Burleigh Oxton, 83, of West Bath, passed away peacefully at the Hill House Assisted Living Center, on Friday, November 20, 2009.
Burleigh was born on September 13, 1926, the son of Leroy and Ardell Harriman Oxton. He grew up in Liberty, Maine graduating from Walker High School, class of 1944.
After graduating he drove a school bus for the town of Woolwich. Known as a man that could do anything he was also an Electrician and did electrical work for many years. From 1979to 2000 he was the supervisor of the maintenance and transportation for the town of Bath. For 25 years he was a member of EMPA ( Educational Maintenance Plant Association), a 40 year member of the MAPT (Maine Association of Pupil Transportation) of which the last 10 years he was an honorary member. In 2005, the EMPA named an annual state award after him known as the A. Burleigh Oxton Award, for having the best maintained school. Mr. Oxton was also a life member of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, Bath Lodge #934.
Burleigh had many hobbies, collecting trains, dancing, and cookouts with his family. A special hobby that his family will not forget is his love for speed boat racing. Burleigh built his boats and competed back in the 50’s – 60’s. In 1963 he received The Governors Trophy in competitive speed boat racing.
Burleigh is predeceased by a sister Dorothy Hynes in 2008.
