Norton Gailer Chaucer M.D., 90, of Milford, devoted husband of 63 years to Dorothy Paine Chaucer, departed this life on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at his home. Dr. Chaucer was born on September 2, 1916 in New Haven ,CT son of Harry Aaron Chaucer and Mae Gailer Chaucer. He grew up at 225 Bishop Street where his beloved mother and aunts Esther and Bessie Gailer founded and ran the Gailer School for many years. Many New Haven children were educated at the popular Gailer School through 8th grade. Norton Chaucer was educated at the Sheffield Scientific School a program of Hillhouse for science oriented students. He received his B.S. from Yale in 1937, and M.D. from Columbia Medical in 1941. He was a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served at the Brooklyn Naval Hospital, Naval Air Station in Puerto Rico, U.S. Navy Hospitals in Bethesda, MD, Portsmith, VA, and Corvallis, OR. After the war he earned a Masters of Public Health at Yale and became health director in Fairfield in the 1950’s. In 1962 he became health director of Hartford and West Hartford and while there worked to create a new modern health department facility. He leaves behind his two sons: Timothy P. Chaucer and his wife Sharon of Milford, and Harry Y. Chaucer and his wife Kathleen Ready of New Haven, VT. He leaves behind four grandsons: Alexander Paine Chaucer and his wife Kathleen of Middlegrove, NY, Seth T. Chaucer of New Haven, CT, Benjamin T. Chaucer of Burlington, VT, and Michael T. Chaucer of New Haven, VT. He was predeceased by his eldest son Norm. He also leaves behind three step-grandchildren: Sam, Sarah, and Anna. He leaves behinds two sisters-in-law: Meredith Paine of Crystal River, FL, and Margaret Paine of Sherbourne, MA. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, especially Judith Long Foster of Dunedin, FL, Priscilla Morris of Hudson, Fl, Jane Morris of Gainesville, FL, and Cyndy Paine Lobruzzo of Harvard, MA, Gretchen Panet- Raymond of Bradenton, FL, and Martha Billings of NH.
