Norton Albert Thurber ‘Nort’ (age 84) passed away peacefully at home on February 1, 2016. Nort was born on June 28, 1931, in Montague, Massachusetts to Gilbert and Bertha Thurber.
He met and married his beloved wife, Virginia, in Prescott, and they moved to Flagstaff in 1958. Nort went to work for Arizona Public Service at age 19 and retired after 40 years of dedicated service. Nort and Virginia also spent nine idyllic years living and working at the Childs-Irving Hydroelectric Power Plant on the Verde River where Nort lovingly maintained the turn-of-the-century hydroelectric generators. He loved his career and his family. Nort also loved working on cars, inventing mechanical gadgets, gold panning, planting his greenhouse, working at the sawmill he built, and tinkering in his shop. He designed and built a 1911 vintage automobile, which he drove in Flagstaff’s annual Fourth of July parades. Nort was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and loved serving others selflessly. Nort is preceded in death by his parents, his sister and four brothers, and his son, Paul.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Virginia, and by daughters Carolyn Voigt (Bruce), Ann and Barbara, his daughter-in-law, Diana, 10 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Nort loved life and was a friend to all who knew him.
