Norman G. Weingart, 88 of Salem, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 28, 2013, at Crandall Medical Center in Sebring, Ohio. A lifelong resident of the Salem area, he was the son of Edward Weingart and Iva (Riffle) Weingart. Norm graduated from Goshen Union High School in 1942 and attended Mount Union College, where he majored in math and played football. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1942, where he achieved the rank of lieutenant. Norm was a B-26 Bomber Pilot and served in the European Theater during World War II. From 1946-1957, he proudly served in the Air Force Reserves. Norm loved to fly and held a commercial pilot’s license. He celebrated his 80th birthday by taking family and friends on airplane rides. From 1948-1957, Norm worked in sales with the Deming Pump Company. In 1957, he founded the Ohio Pump Company where he remained as president until his retirement in 1977. An active businessman and entrepreneur, Norm founded and ran a number of Salem-based companies that specialized in water treatment, including Topco Manufacturing, Pollution Control Rental Systems, the Cardinal Pump Company, and PC Leasing. He was active in the creation of Salem Air Park and was appointed to the Airport Authority Board in 1967. As a member of the Salem Chamber of Commerce, Norm chaired the 1976 Bicentennial Celebration. He was a member of the Salem Golf Club; the Salem Kiwanis Club, where he served as president; Sevakeen Country Club, where he served for many years on the Board of Directors and as president; and the Salem Elks Club. Throughout his life, Norm was an active and devoted member of Bunker Hill Methodist Church. He enjoyed working on the church finance committee and was influential in creating the Bunker Hill Endowment Fund. Norm is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Roberta (Weber) Weingart, whom he married in 1947, his son Mark (Heidi) Weingart, an attorney in Phoenix, Arizona, and his son Scott (Shelley) Weingart, Superintendent of West Branch Local Schools. His beloved daughter Valerie preceded him in death in 1977. Norm is also survived by six wonderful, supportive brothers and sisters: Ray, Georgene, Barbara, Kenny, Nancy, and Joan. He will be remembered fondly by the greatest joys of his life, his five grandchildren: Adam, Brandon, Carson, Corbin, and Valerie.
