On Saturday, January 23, 2021, Norman W. Lauenstein, attorney and former Baltimore County Councilman, passed away. Norman was the beloved husband of Joan: devoted father of Norman W. Lauenstein Jr. (Cindy), Michael Lauenstein (Barbara), Douglas Lauenstein (Joyce), loving stepfather of Lynn Doyle (Michael), Pamela Aiello (Michael); dear brother of Edgar Lauenstein and his late wife Margaret; cherished grandfather of Ashley Ruth (Dan), Brent Lauenstein (Kristi), Leanne Humphries (Alex), Lindsay Packer (David), Amy Lauenstein, Jessica Lauenstein (Andrew Halter), Paige Lauenstein, Jennifer Hardie (Ed), Stefanie Stafford, Angela Balavender (Ethan), Michael Aiello, Samantha Aiello, Maria Aiello. Norman also leaves behind ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers Charles Lauenstein (Anna), Carville Lauenstein (Elnora), and sister Helen Earl (Thomas).
Norman was born in 1927 on the family farm off Norman Creek near Middle River to Charles Henry and Anna Katherine (nee Freudenburg) Lauenstein. He grew up in Essex, worked in the family mercantile business Josenhans Incorporated, and played sandlot baseball. After high school, Norman was drafted into the United States Army. After his discharge, he completed his education by earning a law degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law. He practiced law in Essex for more than 50 years. Norman also served as Baltimore County Councilman from 1974 – 1990 and was Chairman of the Council several times. During his time on the Council, Norman was a champion for the elderly and was rewarded for his work with the naming of the Essex Senior Cooperative Apartments as the Norman Lauenstein Building on Franklin Avenue in Essex. In addition to his memberships in the American, Maryland, and Baltimore County Bar Associations, he was a member and honorary Commodore of the Baltimore Yacht Club. Norman was also a member of the American Legion and the German Society of Maryland. He was a charter member of The Haz Bins, Never Wuzzes and Wanna Bees Club.
Norman was a tireless advocate for his law clients and the citizens of Baltimore County. He had many accomplishments during his time on the Council, including the creation of numerous Senior Centers for the seniors of Baltimore County. Norman enjoyed raising Shetland ponies as a young family man, boating on the Chesapeake Bay, and extensive travel to countries around the world.
