Norman J. “Norm” Salo, 89, of Elkhart, passed away on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at Woodland Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on June 14, 1932, in Stambaugh, MI to the late John and Esmeralda “Izzy” (Ask) Salo.
Norm was also preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn J. Salo; former spouses, Marcia (Haslanger) Burns and Shirley (Ferran) Salo; brothers, Alvin, Dennis, and Dean and his sister, Arlene. He is survived by his children, Erick (Julie) Salo, Sheryl (George) Korovesis, Lois D. Salo, Sheila D. (Jim Suver) Salo, and Lee (Carol) Hite; 2 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Norm was a kindhearted man with a strong work ethic and could fix just about anything. He worked as an electrician for most of his life and retired from AEP. Norm served courageously in the United States Army as a paratrooper. During his time of service, he married Marcia Haslanger and they had three children – Lois, Erick and Sheila. On November 7, 1970, he married Carolyn J. Hoffman. They had one daughter, Sheri, and enjoyed 39 years of marriage before Carolyn’s passing in June of 2009.
He later went on to marry Shirley Ferran on August 23, 2010 and was happily by her side until her passing in July of 2018. In Norm’s younger years, he enjoyed spending time with his brothers. They would do almost everything together from riding four wheelers, hunting, rebuilding old cars like his Model T that he was so proud of, and sharing a beer or two over a nice warm bonfire.
Norm was a man of few words, but he loved to stay busy by working on his old Model T, doing yard work, going for a walk, or riding his bike around the neighborhood. He enjoyed his time at Riverview Adult Day Center where he could stay active and socialize with new friends.
Norm was a proud member of the Amvets Post 436 in Beechwood, Michigan and a member of Hillcrest United Methodist Church. Norm was a man who loved animals big or small, especially his grand dogs. He also enjoyed taking the time to see his grandchildren and great grandchildren whenever he had the chance. Norm will be greatly missed by his loving family and many friends.
