Norma S. Metz, age 94, of Meredosia, passed away on December 22, 2016. She was born August 12, 1922, in Meredosia, the daughter of Charles J. and Bertha Deppe Schmitt.
She attended Meredosia schools, Culver-Stockton College, and Western Illinois University. She married Charles Metz, Jr. in Meredosia on January 28, 1943, while he was serving in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He preceded her in death on April 15, 2003, not long after they had observed their 60th wedding anniversary. They were the parents of four children: Steven Charles Metz (deceased), Lisa (George) Trotter, Kristen (Gordon) Swisher, Megan (Eric) Burbridge, along with one granddaughter, Paige (Chris) Campbell, all of Jacksonville. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews including Susan Whiting, William C. Whiting, Joseph K. Whiting, Elizabeth Magg, Sarah Whiting, and Lydia Magg. She was also preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Frederica S. Whiting.
Mrs. Metz worked for the Federal Housing Authority in San Diego, CA during World War II, for the Foundation Company during the construction of the Meredosia Power Station, and as a teacher for the local high school. She was a member of the Meredosia United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years and was active in United Methodist Women. She and her husband inherited the Schmitt Blacksmith & Machine Shop, a local landmark since 1881. They spent much of their leisure time during retirement years working there and opening it for public visiting from time to time.
