Norma Harms

Norma Mae (Carlsen) Harms, 78, passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, March 22, 2011, with family and went to live in her Father’s house.

Norma was born Dec. 10, 1932, in a small community in south Texas to Niels and Delphia Carlsen. Norma was the youngest of six children. Living on the farm Norma enjoyed working with cattle, close to her father. Norma graduated from Louise High School in 1949 and proceeded to attend Lily Jolly Nursing School at Memorial Hospital in Houston. She graduated as a registered nurse in 1952.
Norma married Carl Harms on Jan. 13, 1956, in Houston. They were married for 53 years before Carl passed away. After their marriage, Norma and Carl lived the military life all over the world, during which time Norma had four children. Norma volunteered as a nurse at their duty stations and was an active participant and volunteer in the Red Cross. Norma also enjoyed bowling and was a member of a bowling league for many years. She also enjoyed square dancing. Norma loved dogs and took pleasure in participating in dog agility.

Norma is survived by her children Richard, of Westminster, Md., Phillip, of Alamogordo, Julie Martinez and her husband, Daniel, and Paula Harms-Van Duyn and her husband, Steve. Norma is also survived by her grandchildren Daniel Martinez and his fianceé, Aidee; and her granddaughter Elena and her fianceé, Bo. Also surving Norma are her two great-grandsons, Daniel and Abran; sister Ellen Dahleen; brother Elmer Carlsen; sister-in-law Janaan McQuail; brother-in-law Bob Casey; and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.
