Norma M. Sweatman, 94, of Virginia, IL, passed away peacefully at her home Tuesday evening, December 28, 2021. She was born October 24, 1927, in Beardstown; the daughter of Ralph and Amanda Ring Launer. She married Leland L. Sweatman on June 19, 1948, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bluff Springs and he preceded her in death on July 26, 2017.
Norma is survived by five children, Dennis Sweatman (Gloria) of Washington, Marilyn Fee (Michael) of Clinton, IA, Diane Hish (Gary) of Virginia, Cheryl Trogdon (Ed) of Lisle, and Roger Sweatman (Carolyn) of Virginia; 10 grandchildren, Jeffrey Sweatman (Elizabeth) of Charlottesville, VA, Kelli Ballard (Jerad) of Washington, Nathan Fee (Heidi) of Clinton, IA, Amanda Ruppel (Ryan) of Arenzville, Renee Becker (Brett) of Pleasant Plains, Bret Hish (Jennifer) of Virginia, Miken Trogdon of Chicago, Zachary Trogdon (Abigail) of Carmel, IN, Courtney Sweatman of Jacksonville, and Justin Sweatman (Jenna) of Jacksonville; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jane Webster (deceased husband, Lewis) of Pleasant Plains and Joanne Anderson (deceased husband, Vernon) of Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Andrew Sweatman; a great-granddaughter; and a brother, Ernest Launer (surviving wife, Shirley of Springfield).
A 1945 graduate of Virginia High School, Norma was a devoted homemaker, farm wife, and mother. She was a life-long member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where she served on numerous boards and committees and was the consummate volunteer. She was a member of the Cass County Home Extension and a passionate St. Louis Cardinal fan. She enjoyed time spent with her husband collecting and selling antique glassware.
Norma’s hobbies included crocheting, gardening, and cooking, and was well known for her outstanding pie baking skills. She loved hosting her large family on all occasions and spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
