Norma Jean “Jean” Amstutz, 91, of Lafayette, passed away Tuesday, January 25.  Jean was born September 15, 1930, to William and Mary (Artman) Shields.  She was a lifelong resident of Lafayette.

She attended Lafayette Catholic Schools and graduated in 1948 from St. Francis High School.  On June 11, 1949, she married Robert W. Amstutz.  Jean worked at Prairie Farms Dairy and Schnaible Drugs and was a housewife.  Jean and Robert loved to play cards and were in card clubs with friends. Jean did ceramics and craft shows with her sister-in-law, Marie Amstutz, and daughter, Janet.  She would also entertain the residents of St. Anthony Healthcare with ceramics and crafts.  She was a member of the Red Hat Society.

Jean was known for her baked beans and homemade pies.  She was a collector of teapots, many teapots!  She loved to garden, travel, fish and spend time with her family.  She was a big Purdue fan and attended many Indy 500 races.   On her 80th and 90th birthdays she got to take much desired Harley rides.   Jean played euchre at the American Legion Post 11, 40 & 8 Voiture and the Navy Club. She was a member of American Legion Post 11 Auxiliary, a member of the Navy Club of Lafayette where she was a past Squadron Auxiliary Commander.  She was a current La Femme with the 40 & 8 Voiture.

She is survived by daughters:  Judy (Archie) Gainey, Delphi and Janet (Ron) Wallace, Lafayette; son, James “Andy” (Anita) Amstutz, Lafayette.  Grandchildren:  Joe Gainey, Bloomington; Patricia (Shane) Strange, Freelandville, IN; Christina (Eric) Kelley, Delphi; Jennifer (Michael) Martin, Lafayette; Chad (Emily) Wallace, Lafayette; Cliff (Sarah) Wallace, New London, WI; Jacob (Megan) Amstutz, Lafayette; Jadrianne “Jadie” Amstutz, Lafayette.

Great grandchildren:  Jonathan (Adrienne) Badgett; Zaccheaus Badgett; Abigail Badgett; Aaron Badgett; Samantha Pickett; Katie Campbell; Charlotte and Paige Martin; Dylan, Bailey and Ashlynn Wallace; Madison Wallace and Brynlee Amstutz.  Great-great grandchildren:  Nikolai and Athena Badgett.  One sister, Mary Alice Purdy of West Lebanon, sister-in-law, Elizabeth “Betty” Greenwald of West Lafayette and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by husband, Robert, brother, William “Bill” Shields and two sisters in infancy, Ramona and Barbara.
