Norma Hunter Fatone

Troy Norma Hunter Fatone, of Pawling Avenue, a political advocate for Troy, died Saturday at Samaritan Hospital Troy, after a brief illness.

Born in Troy, she was daughter of the late George A. and Pearl Kelso Hunter and beloved wife for 42 years of John G. Fatone. She was a Troy resident all her life and was educated at Troy High School class of 1950, Troy Business College and attended Russell Sage College.

Norma owned and operated with her husband Fatone’s Coffee and Gift Shoppe on Fourth Street in Troy for 31 years. They also formerly operated, Only Yesterday in Troy, Troy Personalizing Service and from 1957-69 Fatone’s Gift Shoppe on Pawling Avenue. She also worked for Manufacturers Hanover and Marine Midland Bank in Troy for 22 years and was a bank officer, many years ago.

Norma was very active in Troy politics, as a political advocate for Troy and its first woman City Council member in 1976. She was instrumental in the placing of ‘curb cuts’ on all city intersections. She had been in the Auditing Department for Rensselaer County and Deputy Auditor for the City of Troy during City Manager Dworsky’s term. Norma was vice chairman of Troy’s Urban Renewal.

She was in the process of writing a book on ‘Mame Fay, Troy’s Famous Madam’. Norma loved gardening, decorating, collecting Hummels, genealogy, water color painting and drawing and had a deep love for and dedication to Troy and its history.

Survivors in addition to her husband include her sisters-in-law, Karen Green Fatone of Troy and Geraldine Flanigan Fatone of Green Island and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
