Norma Carvelas, age 92, of Salem, Ohio passed away peacefully at the Essex of Salem II on June 1, 2012. She was born April 11, 1920 in Weirton, WV, the daughter of the late George and Maria (Moskonisotis) Christofaris. Norma was a member of St. John’s Greek Orthodox Church in Boardman and belonged to the Daughter of Penelope and Philoptochos Society of the Church. She was a 1938 graduate of Weir High School and had worked in downtown Salem for over 20 years at Strouss’ and Lustigs. Her husband, Peter D. Carvelas, preceded her in death in 2003, and her only daughter, Maria Carvelas Montgomery in 2001. A sister, Stavroula “Stella” Nyktas and two brothers, Gust and Christopher Christofaris also preceded her in death. She is survived by a son, William Tasi (Karen) Carter of Salem; three grandchildren, Sarah Carter of Westland, MI, Carrie (David) Klimkowicz of Ann Arbor, MI and Grant (Brooke) Steele of Baltimore, MD; and three great-grandchildren.
