It is with great sadness that the family of Norma Belle Bender McClure announces her passing on June 6, 2018 at Brookdale Monument Valley Park in Colorado Springs at the age of 92. Norma was born on October 12, 1925 in Buffalo, New York to Dr. Norman Charles Bender and Irma Belle (Myers) Bender.
Norma grew up in Buffalo, New York where she graduated from Bennett High School in 1943. She attended the School of Nursing at the Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, earning her Registered Nurse degree in 1946. Norma married Carleton McClure in June of 1947. After living in St. Louis and Denver, they moved to Colorado Springs in 1952 where they opened a chiropractic office in the Westside area. Norma dedicated her time, energy, and love to the rearing of their five children.
Norma was an active and energetic woman who relished time spent working on home improvement projects, including wallpapering, painting and gardening. In her leisure time she learned to ski and enjoyed regular trips to Rocky Mountain ski resorts well into her 80’s. In December of 1996 Norma became a member of the Silver Streaks Ski Club where she met her companion of 22 years, Lt. Col. Dane Smith, Retired.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Irma Bender; and her brother, Paul who is survived by his wife, Dian. She is survived by her companion, Dane Smith; brother, Richard Bender and wife, Doie; children, Bruce and wife, Alice, Dan and wife, Dana, Susan, Carl and wife, Kelly, and Kathleen; grandchildren, Fletcher, Annabelle, Clara, Austen, Hayley, Riley, Madison, Jesse, Elizabeth, Jamie, and Crystal; and great-grandchildren, Sicily, Isabella, Evan, John, Nevaeh, Florence, and Francis.
Norma was well loved and will be long remembered for her beautiful smile and open heart.
