Nina Mapes Fisher, of 180 Valley Heights Drive, died at her home Thursday, January 6, 2011.
Nina and her husband, Dale O. Fisher, were married on December 11, 1959, by the Rev. Norris Cook at the Lycoming Presbyterian Church in Newberry. They observed their 51st anniversary in December.
Born March 30, 1933, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of Sidney A. and Zada Allen Mapes.
Nina was a member of the Williamsport High School Class of 1951.
Nina greatly enjoyed reading mysteries, exploring her family’s genealogy and had a love for needle arts, creating quilts and many embroidered pieces. She founded the Patience Quilters Guild in Alexandria, LA in 1979, and was a charter member and held numerous offices of the Treasured Stitchery Chapter, Embroiderer’s Guild of America in Wellsboro.
Nina was a member of the Lycoming Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution in Williamsport and served as Regent from June of 1998 to June of 2001.
Nina also belonged to the Society of Magna Carta Dames, descended from William Malet, one of the barons who signed the Magna Carta in 1215; and the Colonial Order of the Crown, established for descendants of Charlemagne.
Nina was predeceased by a sister, Shirley Ludwig; brothers, Joseph D. and Sidney A. Mapes; granddaughter, Tessa Ardoin; and daughter Amy Elizabeth McGraw, and granddaughter, Shannon Christine McGraw, who both died in a house fire.
Surviving besides her husband are a son James J. Fisher of Stafford, VA; daughters, Bonnie E. Mapes of DesMoines, Iowa and Kathleen Farrar, Taccoa, GA; a sister, Marcella Hiller of Dallas; seven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
