NEW HAVEN- Nicholas E. Caliolo, 59, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2016, at Smilow Cancer Hospital in New Haven, surrounded by his family. Nick was born January 7, 1957 in Waterbury to the late Nicholas and Olive (Birdsall) Caliolo. In his teens, he started his lifelong love of baking at a small neighborhood bakery in the Town Plot section of Waterbury. He was a natural baker, particularly mastering Italian breads and cookies. He went on to own two bakeries and trained numerous people in the profession. In his youth, Nick excelled at sports, having been the quarterback or the captain of several teams. He loved to watch sports, especially his New York Giants and Yankees. He had a love for animals and will be missed by his beloved companion, a dog he rescued named Happy. Nick leaves behind his partner of 26 years, Sheree Tuttle of Waterbury, a son, William Caliolo and a daughter Kristine (Toby) DeLeo, both of Watertown; two brothers Robert (Judy) Caliolo of Watertown and Thomas (Cheryl) Caliolo of Waterbury, and a sister Linda Caliolo (John) Edman of Waterbury. Three grandchildren, Taylor, Sam and Ella Kijak, all of Watertown and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Ann Caliolo. The family would like to thank Dr. Sasaki and the staff at Smilow Cancer Hospital for their compassion and outstanding care given to Nick during his stay.
