Nicholas Aaron Thompson, age 35, passed away suddenly Sunday March 4, 2018. Nick is survived by his wife, Colleen Thompson, daughters Ryleigh, 15, Brenna, 9, and Kenlee, 4, mother, Diane, father Ken, brothers Adam and Eric and sisters Laurie and Jane.
Born March 28, 1982 in Denver, CO, Nick was raised in Aurora. He was a smiley child who loved to play and have fun outside with his brothers and cousins. Nick always knew how to have a good time. One of his favorite past times was going to Chuck E. Cheese to celebrate birthdays with his cousin Brooke and Grandma Marge. Nick enjoyed time with his extended family in Kiowa, including playing in the silo and collecting eggs from the chickens. On weekends the family often spent time at their family property in Bailey, CO. Hiking and riding dirt bikes were some of Nick’s favorite activities.
Nick was an active member and head of the stage crew at Rangeview High School. He built sets and orchestrated the lighting and audio for plays and musicals put on at the school.
While working at Dairy Queen, Nick met his future wife, Colleen. He spent many an evening at Pans on the Platte with his friends, talking for hours over pots and pots of chai tea (the best in Denver!)
After a brief time at UNC, Nick returned to Rangeview High school as campus security, before pursuing his childhood dream of becoming a police officer. He started his career at the Aurora Jail and then joined the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department. From night shifts at the jail he went on patrol, and then quickly moved into being and investigator. Nick created himself a successful career.
Nicks first daughter, Ryleigh was born January 10, 2003. After four years of dating, Nick and Colleen were married in Kauai, HI on October 20, 2007, four years after Ryleigh’s birth. Their second daughter, Brenna, was born on August 4, 2008. Both girls are wonderful sisters to Kenlee, who was born May 11, 2013.Fatherhood was Nick’s greatest joy. He spent hours teaching each of the girls about his passions- theater, gardening, outdoor activities, woodworking, power tools and cooking. Nick thought it was important to honor family traditions and create new ones as the girls got older.
The brothers, along with their father, Ken, volunteered every year for the pyrotechnics celebrations for Independence Day and the Colorado School of Mines. This yearly event inspired Nick to create his infamous, over the top Halloween productions.
Nick was a great father, a wonderful son, loving husband, adventurous brother and loyal friend. He was the first person to lend a hand to anyone who needed it.
He was simply spectacular.
