Nelson Ruiz, 61, died suddenly on November 3, 2016 while training for his first NYC marathon. He was born on March 28, 1955 in New York, NY. Nelson was a retired Sergeant of the NYPD. He spent the last fourteen years of his life in his piece of paradise, Rincón, PR, but New York was always his home.
Nelson served in the US Navy and was a Vietnam Veteran. He also served with the NYPD for seventeen years at multiple commands including the 41, 48, 44, and 42 Precincts, Orchard Beach, and Bronx Narcotics. In 2002, he retired from his dream post, Yankee Stadium.
Nelson’s passion for life was infectious and he made many friends throughout his journey. His love for Latin music, specifically salsa, was evident. The timbales were his instrument and he played in several bands over the course of his life. Nelson had a heart of gold and was a great father, grandfather, and friend.
Nelson is survived by his two daughters, Damari Martinez and Alyssa Ruiz, his three grandsons, his son-in-law, and his six siblings. Nelson was a generous and loving man who touched the lives of so many. His passion for life, his warm heart, and his big smile will be missed. May he sleep now in eternal peace.
