Mr. Nelson Hill was born November 22, 1935, in Courtland, Alabama, to the late Johnnie and Ruth Goodwin Hill. He departed this life on October 27, 2012 in Lawrence County, Alabama.
He graduated from Tennessee Valley High School on May 1954. Later, he attended Alabama A&M University of Huntsville, Alabama. His heart’s desire was to attend Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama. In 1955, he joined the U.S. Army. On April 22, 1961, he married his lovely wife, Shirley Henry.
During active duty as a military man, Nelson and Shirley traveled to the following locations: Ft. Mead, Maryland, Anchorage, Alaska, Vietnam, Salt Lake City, Utah, Germany (twice), Ft. Hood, Texas, Korea (twice) and Thailand. The only places Nelson felt was unsafe for Shirley to travel with him were Korea and Thailand.
Military honors he received were: Private, Corporal, Sergeant and E6. He served faithfully for 21 years as a career soldier. He retired from the army in 1975. Their travels then brought them home.
As a civilian, he was the first black policeman in Lawrence County (Moulton, AL). He worked as a security guard at; Amoco, Wolverine, Decatur General Hospital and Bunge. He was a dedicated employee who loved the uniform appearance. Everything had to be in place and in order.
He was a life-long member of Bethlehem P.B. Church. He served faithfully as a deacon and steward of God’s funds.
He leaves to cherish his memory: a faithful wife of 51 years, Shirley Henry Hill; one sister, Milene Owens, Hillsboro; one sister-in-law, Selma Davidson, Baltimore, MD; a host of precious nieces, devoted nephews, cousins and friends.
