Nellie Sue Porterfield Bowman, 91, a resident of Edgewood Place, Burlington, NC entered her eternal home on December 15, 2016. Previously she lived in her home on Greenwood Drive, Burlington for 55 years.

Mrs. Bowman was born on March 9th, 1925 in the McCray community of northern Alamance County to parents, Claude Allen and Berta Ray Porterfield. She and her six siblings were raised on a tobacco farm. Mrs. Bowman was a 1942 graduate of Pleasant Grove High School where she earned the honor of class Salutatorian. The Porterfield family was of the Primitive Baptist faith, attending worship and community functions primarily at McCray and Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Churches.

In 1946 she married the love of her life, William Maurice Bowman Sr., also of Alamance County. They were married for 55 years and together raised five girls and one boy. She was a loving mother and devoted her life to her family and home. Mrs. Bowman was well known for her delicious home cooked meals and desserts, particularly the Brownstone Front cake.

A member of Glencoe Baptist Church, Mrs. Bowman was active with the Women’s Daytime Fellowship Group, and was devoted to her Bible study and worship. She shared her gift of hospitality, faith, and a positive outlook with her family and friends.

Mrs. Bowman is survived by her son, William M. Bowman Jr. and wife Ann of New Bern; and five daughters: Janice Bennett and husband Graham of Winston- Salem, Linda Qualls and husband Ruffin of Burlington, Fay Hoggard and husband Mike of Greensboro, Ruth Ann Stubblefield and husband Sam of Burlington and Phyllis Cobb and husband Joe of Prospect Hill; 11 grandchildren: Stephen Bennett, Martha B. Metzler and husband Sam, Graham Bennett Jr. and wife Nomi, Evelyn Q. Rice, Alex Bowman, Hayden Hoggard and wife Kayrn, Nathan Hoggard, Caroline S. Jackson and husband Justin, Margaret Ann Stubblefield, Dustin Cobb and wife Kristie, and Morgan C. Hurdle and husband Brock; 11 great grandchildren: Bud and Bennett Metzler, Talia and Shelley Bennett, Bradlee Rice, Rayne Cash, Matthew Jackson, Luke and Blake Cobb, and Peyton and Mason Hurdle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Maurice Bowman Sr.; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claude A. Porterfield Sr.; 4 sisters, Frances Durham Wells, Ruth P. Rascoe, Elsie P. Whedbee, and her twin sister Nannie P. Somers; and two brothers A. Ray Porterfield and C. Allen Porterfield Jr. Also surviving are several in-laws, nieces, & nephews. She shared a close relationship with Margaret Porterfield, her sister-in-law.
