Nellie Rus was born on February 8, 1916 near Sully, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Sietska Terpstra Van Mersbergen.

Nellie did domestic work in various homes for several years and at Fair Haven in Pella, Iowa for three years. She was also an employee of Big Smith Manufacturing Company in Oskaloosa for ten years.

Nellie was married to Peter Rus, Jr., on March 24, 1973. Together they continued serving in volunteer mission work under the American Missionary Fellowship (formerly American Sunday School Union.) She had also been active in the COC Volunteer Corp and Friendship Bible Hour for several years.

Nellie passed away at the Pella Hospice Comfort House on Monday, April 13, 2009 at the age of ninety-three.

She is survived by: her brother, Herman Van Mersbergen of Pella; one sister, Adeline Eveland and her husband, Warren of Oskaloosa; one sister-in-law, Marjorie Van Mersbergen of Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter, on December 12, 1994; her parents; two brothers: Marius and Lawrence Van Mersbergen; two sisters, Harriet and Jeanette Van Mersbergen; three sisters-in-law, Anna Van Mersbergen, Dena Van Mersbergen, and Anna Mae Van Mersbergen.
