Nellie Catherine Taylor, age 92, of Masontown, joined her husband Orian Jehu Taylor in eternal rest on Tuesday November 12, 2013 at Windy Hill Village. A daughter of the late Edwin and Jessie (Shaffer) Menear, she was born September 18, 1921, at the family home in Indian Rocks and grew up in Kanes Creek. Nellie was widowed on November 13, 1954 and was a loving mother who devoted her life to raising her children. She is survived by four daughters, Patricia (Allen) Cummings of Angola, IN, Barbara (Larry) Turner of Masontown, Linda Hovatter of Masontown and Debra Murray of Morgantown; one son, Douglas (Jeanie) Taylor of Amherst, OH, fifteen grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. A sister, Lucille Bias and a brother, Lloyd Menear both of Phoenix, AZ and a brother Robert Menear of Kingwood. She has many nieces and nephews who love her dearly. She was a member of the Kanes Creek Methodist Church and the Church of the Nazarene, she read and studied the Bible daily, she was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 1589 and the Valley District Senior Citizens. She was a devoted fan of the Steelers and the Pirates and strongly supported the 1966 Valley High School football team. Mom loved the Buckwheat Festival and was Preston County Belle in 2000. During WWII she supported the war effort by working at Silman Manufacturing in Arthurdale and Goodyear Tire and Rubber in Akron, OH. Later she worked for WVU Towers. She enjoyed many camping and fishing trips with her brothers, she loved motorcycles and rode until she was in her 80’s. She had a “sweet tooth” and collected many recipes and cook books. She never met a stranger anywhere because she had the gift of being able to talk to anyone. She traveled throughout the U.S. and across the border into Canada and Mexico. Mom reminisced mostly about how much she enjoyed listening to her father, brothers and friends playing their guitars, mandolins, banjos and fiddles and singing on the front porch. Elvis Presley was her favorite performer and collected many items. She spent many years quilting, reading, playing cards, word puzzles, collecting dolls and stuffed animals, and most importantly spending time with her large family; she especially loved going on picnics. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Lisa Ann Taylor, son-in-law Delmes “Sonny” Smith, brothers, Mason, Virgil, Otta and Charles and sister, Sylvia Plum. The family wishes to thank all of those who helped care for our mother during her lengthy illness.
