Nelida T. Aguilar On January 1, 2010, Nelida T. Aguilar, 61, of Corsicana, Texas, passed away peacefully from this world to be forever with Our Father, after a courageous but short battle against a sudden illness. Nelida was born to Lee and Joan (Ascension) Aguilar on September 22, 1948, in Pendleton, Texas.

She is preceded in death by her beloved mother, Joan Aguilar, maternal grandparents Nicolas M. Guzman and Maria Refugio Guardiola de Guzman and paternal grandparents Miguel Macario Aguilar and Sofia Thompson Aguilar. Nelida leaves to cherish her memory: Her father, Lee Aguilar of Belton, Texas; her three beautiful children: Christina (Fernandez) Shapter and husband Andrew of Austin, Texas; David Fernandez, III and wife Kaysie of Austin, Texas; and, Mariana (Fernandez) Elliott, husband Chris and their baby son Jackson, of Houston, Texas; and her many siblings: Robert Aguilar, Richard Aguilar, Dr. Teresita Aguilar, Rita Aguilar-Torres, Michael Aguilar, Gabriel Aguilar, Claudia Morales, Melissa DeLaRosa and Catherine Sherwood, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who will also miss their Aunt Nelda’ and, not to be forgotten, her little furry companion of many years, her dog Rascal! Nelida grew up in Belton, Texas and graduated from Belton High School in 1967 with honors.

She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and Business from Mary Hardin-Baylor College (now University of Mary Hardin-Baylor) in 1980 and later obtained her Masters Degree in Adult and Continuing Education/Human Resource Development from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in 1995, earning a national award for her final thesis. For several years prior to returning to graduate school, Nelida was active in the religious education program at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Temple, Texas, serving as a religious educator and Director of the Religious Education (CCD) Program.

At the time of her death, Nelida was employed as Director of Human Resources at Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas since August 2001. Prior to that, she was Director of Human Resources for the Benedictine Ministries Corporation in Boerne, Texas from 1998 to 2001. In life, Nelida loved to work on her crochet and needlepoint projects, listen to her many music CDs, go to casinos or to play Bingo with her father and siblings. She loved to dance, laugh and spend as much time as possible with her children and precious grandbaby. But, to be remembered most about Nelida was that she was devoted to her faith, her family and her many, many friends. She was an amazing daughter, sister, aunt, mother, and grandmother! Words on a page can never fully describe what an incredibly loving and giving person Nelida was in life.

She was a counselor, a mentor and simply a true friend to so many people, always ready with a welcoming smile, a warm embrace, and a kind and reassuring word when needed. She so sweetly touched the lives of so many people during her short time on earth. Her physical presence will be greatly missed by all, but her spirit will live on for eternity in our memories.
