Neil D. Herman, 76, residing in Elkhart, passed away unexpectedly early Thursday morning, December 24, 2020 at his home. Known as “Mr. Wonderful” to his family and friends, Neil was born on November 13, 1944 in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania to the late Harry and Edith (Ammerman) Herman. In addition to his parents, a son Neil Kyle, three brothers, Roger, Reggie, Dean Herman and his sister Eleanore Linn preceded him in death.

He is survived by his loving wife of twenty nine years, Cheryl L. (Gorce) Herman, sons Phil Kyle, Mike Kyle, David (Jennifer) Klesser, Jeff (Kelly) Klesser, and his brother, Bill Herman. Also surviving are his 9 grandchildren; and daughter-in-law Lacretia Kyle.

Neil was a former part owner of H & H Trucking Company. As a class-A semi driver, Neil had driven regionally and over the road most of his life. He was currently employed by Penske Leasing as a part time semi driver, where the employees and fellow drivers were like family to him.

Neil served as an Elkhart County Councilman for 3 terms, representing District 2. He was a 1962 graduate of Concord High School, and some of his favorite past times were watching old Perry Mason reruns, golfing with his son Phil, or with his friends, and for the last two years, enjoying teaching his grandson, Kyle how to golf. He loved fishing and was an avid Notre Dame football fan. In his younger years, he liked short track bike racing, and motorcycles.

Neil was an all-around great guy, who loved to help people, never held a grudge and forgave easily. He loved dancing, the drums, listening to Elvis and the Beatles, and old 60’s music. Neil’s family meant the world to him and he was a great and much loved grandfather.
