Nathan Ray Coffey, age 76, passed away December 19, 2017, surrounded by his family at his home in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Nathan was born May 1, 1941 in Bishop, California, to the late Floyd and Dorothy (Dalrymple) Coffey. He grew up in the picturesque western Sierra Nevadas and enlisted in the Navy after high school. He later moved to southwest Colorado where he would meet and marry the love of his life, Barbara (Hays) Coffey. Life circumstances caused him to move away from the area, but he always considered southwest Colorado home.
Nathan graduated from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, with a degree in chemistry and went on to pursue a long career in the coal industry.
Nathan was preceded in death by his parents, his younger brother Stephen Lee Coffey, and his infant son, John Caloway. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara Coffey, his three daughters and sons-in-law: Jennifer and John Lentz, Rhonda and Eddie Anders, Caren and Brian Hahn; eight grandchildren: Alex, Eric, and Laura Lentz; Christopher and Matthew Anders; and Benjamin, Sarah and Joshua Hahn, all of the Indianapolis area. Nathan is also survived by sister-in-law Modene (Glenn) Murphy of Bolivar, OH; half siblings Mike (Linda) Coffey of Dove Creek, CO; Mark (Cindy) Coffey of Cahone, CO; Stephanie (Dick) Delp of Lakewood, CO; Irene (Patrick) Ennis of Running Springs, CA; Charles (Elaine) McGehee of Austin, TX; and Martin McGehee of TX. Also surviving are three double cousins with whom Nathan stayed close throughout his life: Jerry (Jane) Coffey of Green Valley, AZ; Lyn Coffey McElfresh of Logan, UT; and Jeanne Coffey (Steve) Wenger of Glade Park, CO.
He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. While his family is comforted to know he is now at peace, he will be missed dearly and remembered in their hearts forever.
The family suggests that remembrances be made to Wheeler Mission at 205 East New York Street, Indianapolis IN 46204, or to St. Francis Hospice.
