Naomi was born on August 27, 1933, in Homer, Louisiana, to her parents, Solon Sidney “Buddy Joe” Shelton and Laura Elizabeth Rabb-Springs. She was the third child born in the family of 14 siblings. Naomi and her siblings were raised in the country and being the oldest girl, she had to learn how to cook, clean and help raise her younger siblings. That training was significant with the rearing of her own 11 children, on a small farm in Jones, Louisiana.
According to Naomi, farm life was hard work: picking cotton, growing vegetables, and tending to the farm animals. No indoor plumbing, so the water had to be drawn from the outside well. She would sometimes make her children’s clothes by sewing the pattern by hand. This did not stop her from giving her children the best she could.
