Nancy Welty Shave passed away on Monday, February 6, 2017, at Brookdale Assisted Living. Nancy was born in Oil City, Pennsylvania, on July 23, 1932, the daughter of the late James A. Welty, M.D., and Janice E. (Conn) Welty.
Nancy attended Allegheny College, the University of Michigan, Calvin College, Aquinas College, and Western Michigan University. She graduated from WMU. Nancy was always interested in learning; she attended lectures and conferences on a wide variety of topics throughout her life, starting with Chautauqua sessions when she was young, and continuing through conferences on spirituality, travel, and others. Nancy was a talented artist and worked in watercolors, pastels, oils, and acrylics. She enjoyed being a tearoom model at Herpolsheimer’s and Wurzburg’s in Grand Rapids.
Nancy was married to Reginald E. Shave for more than 50 years. They met on a blind date at the University of Michigan, where Reg was skating for U of M’s hockey team. Reg preceded Nancy in death in 2007. Nancy is survived by her children, Jim (Ana) Shave, Bob (Theresa) Shave and Jan (Bob Woolworth) Shave, 7 grandchildren (Danielle, Gabriela, Aidan, Lance, Karlee, Lillian, and Davis), and one sister, Martha (Paul) Minnicks. She is also survived by her sweetheart of the past several years, Calvin D. Payne, Lt Col, USAF (retired). Cal was Nancy’s classmate at Oil City High School.
