Miss Nancy Louise Pender, 100, of Burlington died at The Homeplace of Burlington on Thursday, December 8, 2016 at 1:56 a.m.

Miss Pender was born to Henry Ronney and Sallie Scott Pender on November 16, 1916 in in Hertford County, NC. Both parents are deceased. Other family members deceased include an infant brother, Edward Harvey Pender; one sister, Georgia Vaughan and her husband Woodrow Vaughan; and nephew, Robert W. “Bobby” Vaughan.

Surviving nieces and nephews include Mrs. Shirley Vaughan London from Newport News, Virginia, Mr. Ronald Lee Vaughan and wife, Barbara from Gloucester, Virginia and Mr. Roger Edward Vaughan and wife, Doris from Holly Springs, NC. A beloved surviving great niece, Mrs. Nancy Wallace lives in Nags Head, NC and is the namesake of the deceased. Several other surviving great nieces and nephews remain in Virginia. A special family friend, Miss Edith Louise Allen, in Warrenton, NC survives.

Miss Pender spent most of her life as a member of the First Baptist Church in Burlington, NC. There she served many years as a Sunday School teacher, Sanctuary choir member and WMU member. Also, she served some years as a deacon.

Miss Pender graduated from Burlington High School; Campbell College with an associate degree in English; Elon College with an AB degree in English; WMU Training School in Louisville, KY with a master’s degree in Religious Education; and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a master’s degree in Education.

Miss Pender taught 32 years in the public classroom with the last 22 years in Alamance County – first at Williams High School and then Cummings High School where she retired in 1979.
