Born in Rockwell City, Iowa on June 9, 1934 and raised in Des Moines, Nancy graduated from Roosevelt High School and Drake University. While at Drake, Nancy met and married Paul. They shared their love and life together for 65 years. After a short stay in Paul’s hometown of New Britain Connecticut, they returned to Des Moines. Nancy taught third grade for several years and then stayed home to raise their two daughters.
In their later years, Nancy and Paul shared their residence between Des Moines and Naples, Florida. Nancy often commented that she felt most comfortable in her house on the beach in Naples.
A convert to Catholicism, Nancy was a faithful and fervent parishioner of St. Augustin Church and a lifetime member of St. Augustin Altar and Rosary Society. She was also a member of PEO and the Des Moines Golf and Country Club.
Nancy had many friends and enjoyed all their times together. She loved to play golf, mah jongg, tennis and cards. She was also an avid reader. Her goal in life was to be a supportive, loyal and caring person. And she succeeded! But she most enjoyed and cherished the time she spent with her family, especially Sunday night dinners with everyone. She was present at any event in which her grandchildren participated. Cheering loudly, she was their biggest fan, supporting and encouraging them all the way. She never tired of it and neither did they!
Those left to remember Nancy and their time together are her husband Paul, daughters Michelle Hemminger and Mindi (Ross) Dickinson. She was also blessed with three grandchildren – Sarah (Trent) Christensen, Halie Dickinson, Charlie Dickinson and great grandson Henry Christensen. Lastly, let’s not forget the grand-dogs, Rupert, Riley, Teddy and Murphy-who might have been her favorites of all (but they’ll never tell).
“Nana” as she was lovingly known by her entire family, will always be remembered for her kind heart, positive attitude, quick wit and thoughtfulness toward others. As she held all of us in her heart, she will live in a special place in all of our hearts forever, as a loyal and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
