Nancy Ann Shilow Duncan, 67, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Hospice of the Chesapeake in Pasadena, MD, on December 27, 2016 (her parents’ wedding anniversary). She was born on November 6, 1949 in Baltimore to the late Doris and Warren Shilow. Nancy was devoted wife to Charles Duncan; beloved mother to Katie Kenny (née Duncan), Maire Duncan and Jennifer Carter (née Duncan); caring ” Grammy” to Sean Patrick Kenny, who she described as “absolutely perfect” upon meeting. She was dear sister to Mary Gray (née Shilow); delightfully quirky mother-in-law of Patrick Kenny and William Carter; marvelous aunt of Corey and Chelsea Gray. She is also survived by many cousins and extended family who will remember her with fondness. She was extremely devoted to her family and often said being a mother was her proudest accomplishment.
After graduating from Lynchburg College in 1973, she began her life’s work as a teacher, first at Waugh Chapel School, before moving to Germany with the Department of Defense to teach and see the world. She returned to Maryland after marrying to raise her three girls. Over the years, as her daughters grew, she taught part-time for St. Clement’s School, Adult Basic Education, the State Highways Administration, Home & Hospital Teaching, Chrysalis House and Opportunity Builders. She retired from Anne Arundel County Public Schools in 2011. She cared greatly for her students and absolutely loved being a teacher.
Nancy will be remembered as a lover of all things fun and happy.
