Nan devoted her professional life to teaching young children to have a love of books and the knowledge contained in them. After her retirement, Nan continued with her love for books and knowledge and became an avid collector of books. Her study of scriptures was clearly noted by the voluminous handwritten notes that she made in her bible along the margins. Nan was a faithful member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Bloomington, where she obtained lifelong friends.

Nan was known by everyone she touched as a loving and caring person toward others. All those who knew Nan recognized that she was a very stylish dresser who insisted on looking her best at all times. She wanted to know in advance when any of her friends were going to visit so that she could make sure that she looked her best. In addition to being an amateur biblical scholar, Nan loved collecting paintings and other art. She especially treasured those pieces of art created by people that she knew. Nan was proceeded in death by her parents, James B. and Cassie Schenck, both of Columbus, Indiana and she is survived by cousins.
