Myrtle Margaret Wait, 87, of Elkhart, passed away at 6:35 a.m. Monday, March 14, 2011, at Elkhart General Hospital of natural causes.
She was born Nov. 16, 1923, in Chickasaw County, Iowa, to August and Edith (Wheaton) Hauser. She married Paul L. Wait in Kahoka, Mo., in 1941. He passed away in Elkhart in 2006.
Surviving are two daughters, Nona J. (Rick) Hollar of Bristol and Joyce A. (H. James “Jim”) Miller of Elkhart; a son, Dennis E. (Linda) Wait of Middlebury; three sisters, Doris Greenzweig of Urbandale, Iowa, Winona (Bob) Dubbe of Stedman, N.C., and Wilma (Donald Steil) Klemmer of Baker, La.; a brother, John Hauser of Oshkosh, Wis.; six grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Paul; a son, Donald Wait; a brother, Raymond Hauser; and two sisters, Marion Stone and Ruth Steil.
Myrtle was a machine operator for Taylor Products in Elkhart for many years, retiring in the late 1960s. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed canning vegetables. She also was an avid card player and liked rummy, canasta and euchre, as well as playing dominoes and Scrabble. Although she was not a veteran, she spent the early 1940s in California as a “Rosie the Riviter”-style welder for Kaiser Aluminium, a government-sponsored contractor that built ships for the war effort. She was also a former member of the Elkhart Women of the Moose Lodge 599 and enjoyed camping with her family in her free time
