Myrl M. (Roberts) Brown, 84, of Elkhart, died peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, at Greenleaf Living Center. Feb. 2, 1929 – Oct. 23, 2013 She was born Feb. 2, 1929, in Lacon, Ala., to Thomas and Effie (Powell) Roberts. On March 29, 1947, in Cullman, Ala., she married her one and only love, Leon Brown.

She was preceded in death by her late husband, Leon, who died Dec. 6, 1982; her sisters, Magdalene Bagwell and Virgie Chaney; three brothers, William, Hobart and her beloved Willie Roberts; and her loving dog ,“Bow.”

Myrl is survived by her only child, son Jim L.(Sandra M.) Brown of South Bend; five grandchildren, Vincent G. (Buffy) Brown of Elkhart, Sarah J. (Daniel) Chisari of Chicago, Taylor L. Brown of Mishawaka, Parker A. Brown of South Bend and Preston D. Brown of South Bend; one great-grandchild, Alex Brown; and her twin sister, Myrtle Wade of Montgomery, Ala.

Myrl retired from Elkhart General Hospital after 23 years of service. Though she was small in stature, Myrl’s heart was larger than most and beloved by all. She cared deeply for her family, friends and neighbors and never met a stranger. She was, for most in the family, the moral compass and the center to which we all connected. She was a true southern woman — God-fearing, good-natured, hospitable, hard-working and ever-loving — w ho led her life by example and told it like it was. Rarely would someone leave her home without being well-fed, having a good laugh and having been given sage advice. We will miss her silly sense of humor and unconditional love. Her words of wisdom delivered in a thick Alabama accent are forever ingrained in those whom loved her.
