Shirley M. Barrett died Saturday morning, June 20, 2015, at her home following a lengthy illness. She was born in Converse, Indiana on December 30, 1935 and moved to Florida in the early ‘60’s.
She is survived by three children including M. Eric Barrett (Cecilia Lopez), of Tallahassee, Patrick Barrett (spouse Andy Johns) of Easton, PA, and Gabrielle Barrett of Kalispell, MT; and a granddaughter, Naomi, who lives in Montana. In addition to her children and granddaughter, Shirley is survived by her sisters, Beth Geiger (Gene) of Bolingbrook, IL, and Nancy Duncan of Marion, IN; nieces, Sharon Beyer, Amanda Geiger, Tiffany Ogden, Caren Myers, Pam Myers, Jessica Duncan and Tracey Myers. Special long-time friends include Sharon and Willie Glover, Sybil and Ken Holley and Pat Adams among many others.
She was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Mary Myers; her brothers, Joe, Robert, Ross and Mark; and a sister, Norma. A life-long nurse, Shirley received her nursing degree at Franklin College in Indiana and later her BSN at FSU followed by a Masters in Public Health from the University of North Carolina.
Although she touched many lives through her various nursing positions, her primary passion remained with public health services, including stints with the Leon and St. Lucie County Health Units. Her volunteer efforts were many and included work with Hospice, the Tallahassee Senior Center and with the Red Cross following Hurricane Andrew in South Florida.
