Rachel Alma Purdy Meadows, 91, fell asleep in her earthly body on Saturday, July 21, and opened her eyes to eternal life in her Savior’s presence. Rachel, daughter of Ezekiel and Margie Shay Purdy, was born on September 27, 1926, in Roanoke, Virginia. She was predeceased by her parents and brother John B Purdy, and is survived by two sons, Rev. Gerald (Debra) Meadows, Jr. of Sturgis, South Dakota, and David (Sandy) Meadows of Dothan, Alabama; two daughters, Judy (Frank) Voran and Elizabeth (Jon) Johnson, both of Tallahassee, Florida; 15 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Rachel graduated from Jefferson High School and married in Roanoke, then moved to Springfield, Ohio in 1956. She raised her four children as a single mom in Miami, Florida (1963), and moved to Tallahassee in 1977, working as a secretary for the State until her retirement at age 75. Rachel was a church pianist for many years. She was faithful to her Lord and her family through many difficult circumstances, and her kindness, generosity, consistent Christian character, and gentle spirit serve as a treasured legacy.
